1 Month progress report

I started this board a month ago and have been pleased with how its gone so far.
We now have 253 members! 778 topics- of which I estimate about 600 are tapes available to download! We have made 2290 posts!

I'd like to thank Jayman for his hard work as moderator- thanks for volunteering for that important role mate! Jayman also deserves nuff props for uploading so many great tapes. Big thanks and respect are due to Beatstreet, who doesn't use the site but was very helpful during the setting it up process. He is a soul boy but has a big generous heart to donate his time to this project for no reward but thanks and apreciation!

Thanks to the Valued Contributors! -too many too name but you know who you are- some of which were very quick to spend time posting great tapes and videos here. Thanks to everyone else who has contributed tapes- if I see you've dropped lots I'll give you Valued Contributor status- if I dont notice your hard work and want this status than please PM me.

Thanks and apreciation of course go out to all those at DHR who invited me to recycle their old links from the archive there- this project is still underway. If anyone sees their links used here and they didn't give me blessings to use them then my apologies if you are not happy about that- just pm me and I'll replace your original links with a re-upload!

A Plea:
There are some members who have posted many messages of thanks for tapes they download to enjoy (which is what the site is for!), but I would apreciate it if you could make more of an effort to contribute to the board with posts of your own. There are many sections here to post in and many sources on the net where information, pictures, video, mixes and tapes can be found. download these and re-upload them here. As long as you dont directly link-steal and remember to credit the source that'd be fine and welcome. The only other designated status I can atribute is "Leach"- which I havn't used yet and don't really want to.

Thanks also to all those who take time to read these sections in Welcome To soundtapes.com so that they understand how the site works (you wouldn't believe how many PM me about not being able to see links!), and also to those who post in the Introduce Yourself thread, before getting stuck in (I'm a bit disapointed that this is the minority of users!)

Keep up the good vibes all and chip in to make this an exciting board to use!

Some changes made today. The site is no longer called soundtapes.com it is now soundtapes.co.uk

I also deleted 630 of our members as they were not sharing tapes, pictures, videos, mixes, concerts, stories, de nada and they neglected my offer to make them valued contributers for making a financial contribution. Two more people made financial contributions so I spent the money on a couple of new needles as I'd blunted the last ones playing too many crackly 45s, so hopefully my next lot of mixes will sound a bit clearer.

I also mucked up the appearance of the board- this will change soon. sorry about that.

I've closed the board to new members but have posted the message that people who want to join should e mail me so I can make sure they're ready to contribute before they join.

I hope now that we'll all feel more ready to free up our precious tapes. I plan to share the bulk of my collection but did not want to just give it away free to all those leeches (no disrespect intended to anyone who is happy to do that, or to the leeches- I know its just a time thing).

Can I request to the remaining members that they keep putting a bit of time in when they can to share more of the good stuff we have here.

I hope no one minds the changes taking place!

ok mate- is this any better? I'm in two minds but would like feedback. I've asked SkreD to do some fine-tuning and change it as he likes anyway. I've reponed the forum so as new members come we'll just let them know they need to contribute in their own way as soon as possible. maybe we should put a limit on how many titles should be leeched?

Hi to all members

Summer went quick hey! I’m really happy with the way the place has been going since the May clean-up. We’ve got a great core of contributors and dedicated moderators.

When a new member joins I now ask how they will contribute before I activate them. Only about ten percent then get back to me and say they will contribute with audio. I then activate them and according to the rules of the site (see-

) they need to then contribute within a week of joining to become a valued member. We only want members with Valued Member status. I havn’t been deleting members who don’t get that status and instead have been giving them a short ban and a note reminding them of the rule, but I wont keep banning the same people I think one strike and out is fair now. People can always rejoin when they get t heir thing together.

Talking with moderators another issue with the sharing is that some people have contributed one or a two tapes and then taken 50 or more. An idea that’s been suggested is that a ratio of one upload- twenty downloads would be fair. That would be a lot of work to keep track of but I’d like to suggest it now and I’m sure you know who you are if you need to rip a couple of tapes to get your balance straight.

Remember that you can contribute to the site with flyer and poster scans, stories, reviews, questions, links to other good sites, as well as photos, video, mixes and sound tapes. Post mid 90s tapes are quite thin on the ground here- probably as the moderators and myself are not into them personally but we would welcome more of them on the site. Dub sounds like Aba Shanti and Jah Shaka are some of the most popular sounds here so more of those would be great too.

PS- Today I went through and deleted the users who had not gained Valued Contributer Status. I just left the most recent members to join and we'll see if they contribute over the next week. It's probably best if I do it every weekend. If you get deleted you can join again another time when you become able to contribute. Deleted about 30 today. There were about ten users who have never posted and I'll e mail these to see if they still want to be members.

I hope all's well. Been a bit quiet on the site recently.

I'm opening up the site again because I've had no subscriptions for 2010 yet (I got about 5 for 2009) so it seems like a good time to do it. I don't have alot of time to keep on top of the handling users either. When I sent e mails to people wishing to join to ask them what they would like to contribute it would usually go to their spam box so alot of people would not get the message. I wont let the site get like how it was as soundtapes.com though I expect everyone to contribute in some way and anyone who takes alot of stuff without contributing will be banned. If anyone does make a financial contribution to cover the costs of the site that would always be welcome from those who don't post tapes. Not that I particularly need the money but it's the principal for me and I know contributing members got annoyed with all the leaching last time, so everyone should be trying to get the "Valued Contributer" status.
Rapidshare have changed their system and links now last about 30 days if not used, so please stick to mediafire or megaupload as these still seem to be the best people to upload with as the links last.
