| "nitty gritty 15 years after his tragic death on june 24 1991
the late glen "nitty gritty" holness was born in 1957 and died on this day 24th june 1991 . nitty gritty to me was one of the purest dancehall singer ever lived. he was not an imitator but rather an originator. having started his career in the mid 70's, by 1979 he was singing on stereophonics disco, black star, and many other sound system. as the 80's begun he decided to start recording again the first release in ten years "everyman is a seller" was released on youth promotion in 1983, "morning train" produced by eric bubbles soon followed by 1984 nitty gritty was recording full time around that same time he introduced tenor saw to sugar minott who recorded his first set of songs. around 1985 jammys had just cut the first computer ridims, and nitty gritty joined the prince jammys stable which had, don angelo, wayne smith, pad anthony, super black, chaka demus, tonto irie, bailey, plus more.
before he left for england in 1986 nitty gritty was never off the charts songs like sweet reggae music, letting of steam, man inna house, creator, excuse me, hog inna minty had dancehall fans from ja to uk begging for more. nitty gritty married in 1986 and had a son born in england in 1987. he prefered to record for u.k produces around this time. he did record the a1 album "general penitentiary in 1987 for black victory. he frequented new york city hanging out with fellow singers & djs in brooklyn where he would lose his life by the gun. his legacy has gotten bigger as time goes by and his music will never die.......... " - By Rasmye, 24th June 2006 Me and my brethren Reuben Da Silva were members of KingTafariLove SoundSystem from Brighton. We were carrying bass box up the stairwell of Somerleyton Flats in Brixton (Bloody lifts never worked there) back in the late 80s... turned a corner, and lurking in the shadows was Nitty Gritty swinging a lock knife on a chain. Trouser staining time! Luckily, Reuben recognised him and started talking to him about our dance and we left in peace. Wasnt it SuperCat who shot him? |
